Description

Great Britain, circa 1860-1880. "Gems: Illustrious Characters." Twenty-four carved plaster Victorian cameos of notable men from ancient days, housed in a singular and purpose made double-sided book-style presentation box. Cameos measure approximately 4,5 x 4 cm, permanently mounted onto a green velvet backdrop. 8vo. Bound in the contemporary style of a book, half black morocco over marbled boards, gilt title and tooling to spine, measuring approximately 25 x 16 x 4,5 cm. Manuscript index naming each of the men represented, penned onto recto and verso pastedowns. A most unique Victorian treasure.

Each side reveals twelve important historical figures, men of science, philosophy, literature, art, and great rulers - some of whom include:

• Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) - Italian artist, mathematician, inventor
• Michelangelo (1475-1564) - Italian Rennaissance scultor, painter, architect
